The Baby in the Manger

CD's from Friday's luncheon available below

John 1:12
"Yet to all who receive Him, to those who believed in His name, [the Baby in the Manger] He gave the right to become children of God." (bold mine)

I'm still loving my NLT Daily Chronological Bible.  It's been 2+ years and I'm still reading most every morning.  Currently, I'm 20+ days behind.  I'm savoring every word.  It's rich!

My reading this week has given me new appreciation for the Baby in the Manger.

Romans 5:2 NLT, "Christ [the Baby in the Manger] has brought us into this place of undeserved privilege where we now stand..."

5:6  "When we were utterly helpless, [the Baby in the Manger] came at just the right time and died for us sinners.  (sinners - that's YOU and ME.)

5:8, "God showed his great love for us by sending [the Baby in the Manger] to die for us while we were still sinners."

Perhaps you, like me, once thought church people were weird.  Maybe you, like me, made fun of Christians.  Perhaps you, like me, were living to please yourself and your every whim.

While we were like this, God sent  the Baby in the Manger.   God loves us, warts and all,  more than we will ever comprehend.   He sent the Baby in the Manger in order to bring us into a place of undeserved privilege and right standing with Himself.

We don't deserve His goodness.  This is the significance of the Baby in the Manger.

We have a responsibility to respond to the Baby in the Manger.

  1. Have you responded by believing and receiving Him therefore becoming one of God's children?  If this is a new concept to you, click HERE to learn more about right standing with God.
  2. If you have responded to [the Baby in the Manger] - may you appreciate afresh, as I have, the significance of the Christmas season.

Christmas Tip #2:
Give the Baby in the Manger a Birthday Gift this year...  I'll elaborate more tomorrow.  In the mean time - ask Jesus what HE wants for His birthday!

Today's Christmas Reading:   Luke 1:26-38

Christmas Countdown

Isaiah 7:14
The virgin will be with a child and will give birth to a son and will call Him Immanuel.

The Christmas countdown is on!  We're officially a week before Christmas!

In lieu of finishing our Boot Camp series  in the midst of such a busy season, I'm going to hold off until after Christmas.   The subject deserves our focus.

Instead, over the next week, I'm going to share Christmas tips and nuggets to get your heart and mind toward the Reason for the season.

Christmas Tip #1:
Grab a cup of hot coffee and tea...  Grab a warm, cozy blanket...  Grab your Bible and sit down in a comfy chair...  Preferably by your Christmas Tree or fireplace EACH DAY.

Before shopping, decorating and entertaining, pending time in prayer and Bible reading.

Suggested Christmas Reading for the Day:
  • Isaiah 7:14 - The coming Messiah
  • Isaiah 9:6,7 - The coming Messiah
  • Luke 1:5-25 - Elizabeth's pregnancy with John the Baptist  (John was Jesus' cousin.)
Time with Him will supernaturally enable you to:
  • Exhibit kindness to the people closest to you.  Sadly, they can often get the brunt of our bad moods.
  • Love the unlovable people you may be forced to see at parties, celebrations, etc...
  • You'll resist the temptation to race the senior citizen to the only table in the restaurant! (Sadly, I once did this - and won.)
  • You'll exhibit the temperament of Jesus, even while standing in a long line!

God's Amazing Work at Iron Sharpens Iron

Don't miss all the pictures below and the link to see more from last Friday's lunch!

Lt. Governor Dan Forest and his wife, Alice.
"No doubt, without Jesus, we would not have a marriage."  Lt. Governor Forest

Romans 12:1-2
Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices,
holy and pleasing to God - this is your spiritual act of worship.
Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world,
but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.  Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is - His good, pleasing and perfect will.

(The Lt. Governor opened with this verse - from memory.)

  • To all of you who attended last week's luncheon...
  • To all of you who persevered and gave up time at work...
  • To all of you who drove long distances...
  • To all of you who gave up shopping on a beautiful Friday during this busy season...
  • To all of you who insisted your husband or friend attend -
THANK YOU!  Thank you for making our first co-ed event a BIG success!

We pray you were blessed, encouraged and challenged to know and love Jesus more.  Truly, last Friday was a unique opportunity.

As the leader of an organization, I'm very careful who I hand a microphone to - VERY CAREFUL.  Our goal is always to discern God's messenger for each audience and invite her.   (This time - it was a him.)

CLEARLY, if you were in attendance, you can attest:  Lt. Governor Forest was God's messenger for this audience!

I have not spoken to a single person who was not BLOWN AWAY by his transparency; his candor; his courage and his honesty as he shared his story on Friday.

He shared what his quiet time looks like each day -  The Bible; (Boot Camp girls - notice he has a literal Bible not an electronic Bible:); My Utmost for His Highest; Daily Light."

He shared that he used go through the motions of religion, but can distinctly recall when something transforming happened in his wife.   That's when he realized he didn't have what "she had - and wanted it!"  (Do you see the power of 1 woman in 1 family and how she changed a generation by taking the "Jesus thing" seriously???  That's next month's lunch!)

The One Woman, Alice Forest (center)

Without knowing, Lt. Governor Forest validated (from a man's perspective) what every speaker for the last 2 and a half years have said from the ISI podium concerning marriage and relationship with Christ.

Example:  "It's not about religion - it's about a relationship with Christ.  And it starts by spending time with him everyday."

Another Example:
"Ladies, your man wants respect.  Men, your wife wants you to love her.  In fact, you should date her.  Do you have a regular date night?  If you don't establish it now!"

Oh my word -  I just wanted to jump up and down and shout, "Sing it brother!"

Without knowing, he even validated the impact of books we carry on a regular basis at our book table such as, "The 5 Love Languages" and "Love and Respect."   I didn't tell him ahead of time to promote those books.  Jesus did it through him, as God's chosen messenger for this audience, as he shared how these books changed his thinking and behavior.

If you live in the state of North Carolina, be encouraged!  We have a Lt. Governor that's a family man.  And he's a man who has a greater fear of God than the man or woman sitting across the table from him.  With great boldness, he lives it daily on the stage called the Lt. Governorship by being the hands, face and temperament of Jesus.

Another thing that was VERY impressive about OUR Lt. Governor - He stayed until every person who wanted to talk to him - could talk to him.  He was kind and approachable.

He was asked during the Q&A if he would consider a run for the governorship in a few years.
(Great question.)

But I later thought, "Governorship?"  I'm thinking - THE PRESIDENCY.

It was wonderful having the men with us!  I pray they enjoyed being included this month.

Personally, I was excited that my husband, Tim got to experience ISI.   I was nervous about ALL THE DETAILS - Tim knew it and just stood beside me like an anchor of strength.

My Dad, got to come too!  So grateful that he too could experience something he hears so much about and wholeheartedly supports.  "Love you Dad!"

It wasn't just a couple event either.  We also had girls come with their girlfriends.  They had fun too!

We carried on like any ISI - corporate prayer and all!  (A side note, do you realize how many people have been helped in their personal prayer life as a result of us taking time to model prayer each month?  I should start counting all the people who share the difference this segment of the lunch makes in their personal prayer life.  Some have even grown bold enough to start Prayer Ministries in their church because they've learned the basic fundamentals of prayer and practiced it in an environment that they don't feel judged.)

It was really cool to hear the men pray.

Shout out to our amazing photographers:  Fuller Harvey and her assistant Heather Garrity.
Contact her at photographybyfuller@yahoo.com  if you ever need a photographer.   She's awesome!

Again, thank you Lt. Governor Forest and Mrs. Forest for sharing your lives with us - for sharing how Jesus makes a BIG difference in your everyday life.  Thank you for your willingness to put it on display for the encouragement of many!  MANY were blessed and encouraged because of your willingness to tell your story.  Thank you.

Thank you to everyone who came and supports our work at Knowing God Ministries.  We pray that you want MORE of Jesus in your everyday life as a result of last Friday.  (And every ISI Friday for that matter; as well as the blog and any other way we've helped you to know Jesus in a greater depth.)

As you allocate your end-of-year giving, we would be greatly appreciated your remembrance.  Your entire donation is tax deductible and goes to further MORE ministry in Jesus name.
No amount is too small.  Click HERE to support the work at Knowing God Ministries

Closing Note:
Emma, our intern will come into the office later this week.  (I don't dare touch the recording without her help.  I've erased entire messages trying to export a message.  Praise Jesus for techie people!!!)

If you want a copy of Lt. Governor Forest's message - let me know.  I can arrange to have them available on the website.  Otherwise, they will be available at next month's ISI.

Funny Story
I rarely EVER eat at ISI.  I move food around on my plate.  So afterwards, I'M STARVING.  And I don't want country-club food.  I want Chick-fil-A waffle fries!   Couldn't resist sharing the real us after a luncheon of this magnitude.

Autumn, she gets dragged a lot of places.  What a good sport to hang in with me after many long hours!

Boot Camp Day 22 - Prayer: A Do Nothing Activity?

1 Timothy 4:8
"For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things..."
(italics mine)

The last 2 sessions of boot camp were HARD.   Often, I'd find myself looking at the clock praying for 9:00 to quickly come!

As physically difficult as those sessions were, they gave me a sense of accomplishment.  I distinctly recall leaving the last session thinking, "If I can do that, I can do anything!"  I was ready to take on the world!

Girlfriend, PRAYER leaves me with the same feeling.  Many days, I feel lethargic and lazy.  Yet I come out of prayer energized; faith filled; and courageous.
  • Prayer is how I overcame my fear 3 years ago about blogging and courageously, "let my light shine before men so they could praise my Father in Heaven."  (Matthew 5:16)

  • Prayer is where I heard the call to publish my homemade prayer journal in 2006 and out of the earnings plant a vineyard (Proverbs 31:16) that would one day be called Knowing God Ministries.

  • Prayer is where I heard the call to compile all the Lord Himself had taught me about a meaningful quiet time and format it into a Bible study.  It would be called, Intimacy with God.  Initially, feeling very inadequate, the Lord simply encouraged me to bring Him my inadequate 5 loaves and 2 fish, trusting Him to feed the mulitudes with it.  He does to this day.

  • Prayer is where I heard the call to write what the Lord had been teaching me about still having purpose in life despite a VERY DARK period of time I walked through.  It would be called Created for Purpose.  It would give others hope that their life has purpose even in hopeless circumstances.

  • Prayer is where I heard the call and summoned the courage to approach the Lt. Governor of North Carolina and ask him to be our guest speaker on Friday.
Prayer often feels like a do-nothing activity.  Quite the contrary, my friend.  Prayer is powerful!

What does your prayer time look like? Does it exist?   Do you need help?

Boot Camp Recap - 10 New Habits

1 Timothy 4:8
"For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things..."
(italics mine)

Two weeks ago, I concluded Boot Camp.  I really enjoyed the experience.  The trainer was challenging.  The women were great.  In fact, I miss them all!

Since Boot Camp, I've formed new habits.  In addition to walking/running my dog, I've incorporated new exercises that strengthen my core.  Exercises that help strengthen the back of my arms -  (so my kids don't call them "jello" anymore!)

This week, we'll conclude our Boot Camp.  Before we finish, let me ask:  Have you formed new habits?  Are you different than when you first started?

The following list is a review.  Check off the areas where you've formed new habits.

Areas you can't check just yet - write them down on a post-it note.  You may even want to go back and read the post.

"As a result of Boot Camp, I have a:
  1. Chair or special place I spend time with the Lord.
  2. Bible - I have a literal Bible in my lap in lieu of my computer; ipad etc...
  3. Gadgets - I have stopped receiving my main spiritual meal  from online devotions.  They are yummy vitamins. Not the meal.
  4. Interests or Challenges - My reading each day interests me and is helping me in my problem areas - ie: Marriage; parenting; patience; kindness; forgiveness, faith, etc...
  5. My doctrine is solid.  I KNOW Jesus is NOT one of the boys.  He, alone, is the Way to God -
  6. My ears, little ol' my ears work!  I know I can HEAR personally from God.
  7. Known sin hinders my ears from hearing  clearly from God -
  8. Refusing to be obedient to what I HEAR in my quiet time hinders break through -
  9. Thankfulness - I intentionally am choosing to count my everyday blessings as well as 2013's.
  10. A Jesus girlfriend - I intentionally have a her in my life.  If not, I'm praying for God to send a her."
How many new habits have you formed?  Remember - it's not about religion.  It's about a relationship with the God of the Universe who makes the quality of our everyday lives SO much sweeter!

Boot Camp Day 20 - Do you have a "HER" in your life?

1 Thessalonians 5:12
Dear sisters, honor those who are leaders in the Lord's work.  They work hard among you and give you spiritual guidance.  Show them respect and wholehearted love because of their work.

I read this passage 2 weeks ago in my quiet time.  It was a completely new thought to me.  Immediately, she came to mind.  My next thought was, "I ought to take her to lunch and thank her for her ministry into my life."

She is older than me AND older in the Lord than I am.  She has years of experience of walking with the Lord.  She has also walked in places of leadership and great responsibility in Christian service.

This woman prays for me and KGM regularly.  She always asks specific questions about my family.  She also holds my feet to the fire by challenging me to make sure I'm hearing from God clearly.  She offers advice that's always based upon God's Word.

When I leave her presence, my faith is increased.  My view of God is bigger because her view of God is BIG.  She helps me to see Him in a fresh new way.  Because of my fellowship with her, my prayer time seems to take a deeper dimension.  I love Him more, because I've been with her.

Let's not just offer thanks for the people and things that make our lives easy or successful, but lets also think of people who make spiritual contributions to our life.
  • What or who makes you know God better?
  • What or who makes you more useful in God's service?
Girlfriend, we need people like this in our life.

If you do not have a her in your life:
  1. PRAY FOR ONE NOW.
  2. When God shows you who she is - connect with her.  Do not procrastinate.
  3. Do not fear rejection.  If she is truly a Jesus girl, she will not say no to you.
Challenge for those who do have a her :
  1. Take the time to thank her over the next week. (You may even want to forward them this post or verse to her.)
  2. Communicate your gratitude to this person and to the Lord.
  3. Ask the Lord how you could honor her.

Boot Camp Day 19 - People of 2013

1 Thessalonians 1:2-3
We always thank God for all of you and pray for you constantly.
As we pray to our God and Father about you, we think of your faithful work, your loving deeds, and the enduring hope you have because of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays.  From Thanksgiving week through the end of the year, I intentionally take time to reflect on God's goodness and faithfulness during the year.

Today, I want you to add another category of thankfulness to the lists we started last week. (By the way, I realize "Thanksgiving Day" has come and gone - but Thanksgiving should be more than just a day.  It should be part of the fabric of our lives!)

Last week's lists:
  • Everyday Blessings -
  • 2013 Blessings -
Today's New List:  Make a list of the people for which you are thankful.

Begin with family members and friends.  You might even add a phrase as to why you are thankful.

Challenge:
  1. Take the time to thank them over the next week.  (You may even want to forward them this post.)
  2. Take time to pray for person you've listed.

Boot Camp Day 18 - Overwhelmed with Gratitude

James 1:16-17
Don't be deceived, my dear brothers.  Every good and perfect gift is from above...

I hope you've started your Thanksgiving lists of:
  • Everyday blessings
  • 2013 Blessings
I must admit, as I make my lists, my heart is so overwhelmed with gratitude that I can hardly contain myself.  My eyes are being opened afresh to God's activity in the mundane of everyday and it's SO encouraging.

I'm seeing:
  • God's hand and resolution in situations that plagued me earlier in the year -
  • The doors of opportunity He's opened since January -
  • Quiet, everyday blessings that I intend on bringing up at dinner to remind my children and husband of God's activity that will encourage them.
  • People who have poured into my life.  (This is a NEW List!  More on this tomorrow.)

  • All I can do is fall on my face and say, "Thank you, Jesus.  Look at all You've done."  I name the items on my list - one by one.  I must warn you, tears will fall at the realization you have nothing apart from His goodness in your life.

This is a busy week for many of you - especially if you're hosting or cooking or entertaining.  But I beg you dear sister, don't miss the blessing of this exercise.  You'll be robing yourself of great encouragement and hope for 2014.  If you can't do this today - MAKE TIME later in the week.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

Boot Camp Day 17: 2013 Blessings; Women's Conference Announcement

    2014 Women's Conference
2 tracks announced! (See Details below)

    Psalm 90:12
Teach us to number our days aright that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

Life is busy.  Before long, it's been 2 years; 5 years or a decade!  Let's not miss life.  Let's not miss God's blessings from year to year.

This week - take time in your quiet time to review your 2013 Blessings.  If you have the Intimacy with God, Prayer Journal, I've encouraged you to use 1 page/a month of your Thanksgiving section to record how God has worked in your life.

If you don't have the Prayer Journal - go back through your calendar or planner during your quiet time.

How have you seen God ordering your steps?  How have you seen His blessings in your everyday life such as:
    • opportunities in business or ministry or
    • spending time with the special people in your life or
    • Divine appointments or
    • sweet memories.

As I review my Journal entries from the beginning of 2013 -  highlights I don't want to forget:
    • A boy's snow/slumber party my husband hosted for my son one weekend in January!
    • The opportunity to share the stage with Lysa Terkeurst  at an event in February!
    • Taking my kids to Krispy Kreme in downtown Raleigh for hot donuts during spring break.
    • Spending a weekend with my aunt, uncle, cousin and parents at their beach house in July!
Do you see the trend?  These are God's EVERYDAY BLESSINGS in 2013!

    Today's Challenge:
    • Add these blessings to the list you started yesterday -
    • What about the challenges in 2013...  Did you have challenges in 2013?  How has God answered or resolved them?
Take time to reflect on God's faithfulness and what He has done in your circumstances.  This helps us to number our days aright that we may gain a heart of wisdom!

Boot Camp Day 16 - Your Everyday Blessings

    Psalm 118:28
"You are my God, and I will give you thanks."

Today when I took my dog, Jake for his morning walk at 7:00am  the rush of cold air seemed to feel like a slap in the face.  It was a brutal introduction to the outside!

As I was walking, I began thanking God for my warm, cozy house I had just stepped out of and desperately wanted to quickly reenter!

My warm house led me to start thanking God for other blessings I often take for granted, like:
    • An indoor bathroom... (Can I get an "AMEN!")
    • Warm showers -
    • A pillow to lay my head at night -
    • A comfy bed to sleep in -
    • Food in my pantry -
    • A grocery store down the street in which to buy groceries -
    • Grocery stores that never run out of food to buy!
    • Clean water to drink -
    • No bombs going off in my back yard...  (Women in other countries face this terror each day.)
    • Electricity in the house!
My father grew up in rural eastern North Carolina.  He did not have running water or electricity until he was 10 years old. (This was in the 1050's!)  This meant going OUTSIDE if you had to go potty in the middle of the night or first thing in the morning!  Can you imagine???

Today:  Do you realize how blessed you are?
    1. Start a list of YOUR blessings.  Blessings that are often overlooked or taken for granted during the day.
    2. Write them down in your journal or on a legal pad.
    3. Label the list:  My Everyday Blessings -
We'll be doing something with that list on Thanksgiving -

    Tomorrow's Post: 2013 Blessings -

Boot Camp Day 15 - Are YOU the Hold Up of your own Break-Through?

    Psalm 32:8,9
I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go...
Do not be like the horse or the mule, which have no understanding but must be controlled by the bit and bridle or they will not come to you.

As shared last week, I am a reformed "selective listener."

My selective listening ended in 2006 when I desperately needed a break-through in my painful and overwhelming circumstances.   I kept asking the Lord for guidance, however only 1 word kept coming to mind during my quiet time.

    The word was “Apologize.”
For 11 years, I had been like a 2 year old -  hands over her ears, refusing to listen, because 11 years prior, I had gossiped about a high school classmate to a mutual acquaintance who turned around and shared my slanderous words with that classmate.  Within days of the conversation, I received a call from my former classmate.  (Talk about being busted!)
Did I ‘fess up?  Nope.  I lied and denied everything.
For 11 years following that fateful conversation, God would often impress on my heart that He wanted me to reach out and apologize.  But I would rationalize His voice away, thinking, “The Lord would never tell me to do this.  He would never want to embarrass me like this.”
Yet now, I DESPERATELY needed a breakthrough.  I needed a miracle!
So at 9:00 a.m., following my quiet time that day, I looked up the phone number and called her.
    No answer.
    Relieved, I left a message.
After several days without a response from her, I sensed the Lord telling me to write her a note.
Haven’t I done enough?  I asked the Lord.   After all, I have not seen this girl in 11 years...”

“Write a note of repentance and apology,”  I kept hearing as I was walking my dog on a sweltering, hot Friday evening.
As soon as I got home, I didn’t even get a glass of water.  I wrote the note.  I confessed everything that I had said and lied about, telling her that I had a relationship with God now and that He had impressed upon my heart to apologize.  I asked for her forgiveness, signed my name, and put it in the mailbox.
Suddenly, it was as if bricks came off of my shoulders.   Oh girl, there was a refreshing in my spirit that I still cannot describe.  It was almost tangible.  Inner joy and peace sprung into existence right there at the end of my driveway.  I may have skipped back to the door – I don’t know!  It just felt so good to have a clear conscience in every area of my life.
Within a month, major breakthrough came!
Do you have selective listening?  Ask the Lord to reveal any area of your life where you may be glossing over the impressions He places on your heart.
    • Could it be an apology?
    • Could it be choosing to forgive someone who's wronged you?
    • Could it be volunteering in that place of service He's been calling you to?
    • Could it be to have that certain difficult conversation you've been putting off?
Whatever it is - DO IT!  Don't wait!  Don't procrastinate it.   Think about it:  it would be a shame if you allowed your own stubbornness to hold you back from all God desires to give you!

Boot Camp Day 14 - Do you have Selective Listening?

Don't miss the announcements following the devotion!

    Isaiah 66:2
"This is the one I esteem," declares the Lord,
"He who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my Word."

When you open your Bible - and nothing is making sense to you...
When you feel like you're merely reading words...

Don't forget this is Boot Camp - I'm going to be direct:  Are you a selective listener in your quiet time?

For many YEARS, I was a selective listener.  I genuinely wanted to hear from God…  BUT… if it required too much of a change in my lifestyle…   No thank you!
OR if it required letting go of an area of my lifestyle that I highly valuedNo thank you!  I’d want to turn to another page and read about God’s love!  (Talk about selective listening…)
So, how do you respond when God impresses something on your heart that you don’t want to hear?
Do you tremble at the Word of the Lord?  Are you humble towards what He has to say

Or do you disregard it, thinking,He can’t be talking about that.  Surely, He’s not telling me to…'  (For far too long, this was my response.)
I’ve had Him reveal areas of pride and unforgiveness in my life.   I’ve had Him impress upon my heart to apologize, even when it would be humiliatingly embarrassing to do so…

If you and I want to grow closer to God...
If we want to hear Him speaking personally to us - (and He will speak!)
If you need resurrection life in your marriage; parenting and/or business...
If you want your everyday life to be more joy-filled and peaceful...

    WE CANNOT BE SELECTIVE LISTENERS.

We must approach our quiet time with a humble, contrite spirit.  And when He speaks, our job is to tremble at His Word with a response.

When Financial Chaos Hits - Luncheon Follow up

Our Iron Sharpens Iron luncheon last Friday... WAS SO GOOD!!!   To those of you who were at the luncheon, thank you for spending part of your day with us.  To see pictures from Friday's luncheon click HERE!

    November General Session:
Finding Peace when Financial Chaos Hits Home

Our speaker, Kim Powell, shared a very personal testimony of great loss due to the 2008 recession and housing bubble.

I believe many people hide in the shadows of shame and embarrassment when they go through foreclosure or bankruptcy or any other financial loss.  However, Kim's transparency and hard-learned lessons moved us to tears.  Some of the lessons I gleaned from Kim's general session:
    • The person who goes into the storm is not the same person who comes out of the storm.
    • Storms have a purpose.
    • Storms have a start and a finish.  They do not go on forever.
    • Even when really bad things happen, GOD IS FAITHFUL!
(If you were at the General Session, what did you glean?)  Leave a comment!

Kim shared it took a solid 5 days to move from their  9000 sq.ft home lost in foreclosure.  As a result, she became deeply convicted that she had been investing her treasures, unknowingly, in the wrong places.

Kim reminded us of the importance of investing in heavenly treasures such as our relationship with Jesus and our relationship with others.

It takes guts and courage to share all that Kim shared with us on Friday.

I personally, as well as the entire Knowing God Ministries Team and Board wish to thank Kim and her husband, John, for their willingness to share their story.   As a result, many were encouraged. Many were blessed to know that they are not alone

Kim's transparency in the general session, gave others the courage to share their stories of God's faithfulness in the WORST of storms.

    Special Workshop

Following our General Session, we opened the floor to anyone who wanted to share their stories of God's goodness and faithfulness in 2013.  Eight women BOLDLY shared their stories.

Many of the life experiences would be most people's worst nightmare. However, these ladies courageously shared of God's personal faithfulness in the worst of circumstances. The tears in the room flowed as God was described as Faithful, Sufficient, Provider, Helper, Prince of Peace and Friend in midst of:
    • Separation and divorce
    • Estrangement from for years to being reunited!
    • A year of insomnia
    • A husband moving a family to America and abandoning her and their 3 children - leaving them without a car or a job.  Yet unwaveringly testified to God's faithfulness!
    • Cancer that's in remission as a result of a bone-marrow transplant!
    • An HIV diagnosis and living with the shame for more than 10 years - until God recently intervened and has washed away her shame!
The testimonials were powerful.  We should have workshops like this more often!

    We heard testimonies of break-through:
    • Impatience to a heart of gratitude
    • Despair at work to professional break-through.

All weekend, I pondered these stories and the unwavering faith of these women.  I was deeply comforted to hear that in the worst of circumstances, God is near; He is still good; He will be faithful; He is practical and how He makes Himself almost tangibly close.

May this encourage you if YOU are in the storm of your life.

Boot Camp Day 13: Is Jesus one of the boys?

    Acts 4:12
Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”

My mom and I were recently visiting my Grandmother, who lives in an assisted living home.  One of the faithful workers were being promoted.  (Rightfully so!)  He's a really hard worker.  His joy is contagious as he connects so beautifully with the residents.  Not to mention, he wears a cross around his neck.  Surely, this man knows Jesus, I thought.

As he sat down to talk to us, I just had to ask, "Tell me when you came to know Jesus!"

So he shared his story...  God was mentioned MANY times.  Buddha was even mentioned.

Not once did I hear him mention, Jesus.

After 20 minutes, I felt I had earned the right to ask, "Who is Jesus to you?"   He never really answered.  He just kept telling me his life story.

Who is Jesus to you?  Like this VERY kind, joyful, hardworking, cross-wearing, devout man -  is Jesus just one of the boys to you?

    One of the boys, like:
    • Buddha?
    • Allah?
    • Confucius?
You've heard the analogy, "God is at the top of the mountain.  All denominations and religions are merely trying to get to God at the top of the mountain.  As long as you're sincere in your faith, you'll go to God's heaven when you die."

The Bible is clear: "Salvation is found in no one else.  For there is NO OTHER NAME given to mankind by which we must be saved."   JESUS!  He's not one of the boys!

In fact, while other religions insist their followers must climb the mountain of good works to their Deity, OUR GOD, sent salvation: JESUS, DOWN THE MOUNTAIN TO US!

This is boot camp, girlfriend.  NO CONFUSION.  Jesus is NOT one of the boys.  In the event that you too may be confused - get it straight.  Jesus is only THE only WAY to God.

Boot Camp Day 12: Why we Don't Hear God Speak

    John 8:47
He who belongs to God hears what God says.
The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.

Have you asked God to speak but it feels like there's cotton in your ears?

Since this is boot camp, I'll get straight to the point:  If you've never established a personal relationship with God, you will not hear God speaking into your everyday life.

Perhaps you are a "head believer."  A head believer, believes there's a God.  Perhaps she's joined the church and has been baptized or christened.  A head believer may even go to the church each week.

Hoever, the word believe means:  we accept what we hear, but then we act on it.

So here's the difference between a head believer and a true believer: a true believer has an established relationship with God through Jesus Christ.
When you transition from head knowledge to responding to God with your heart, you are on the road to becoming a true believer.   It starts with a decision:  the decision to ask Christ to come into your heart.

Have you said "yes" with your heart?   Have you said yes with your mind, will, emotions and intellect?  This is when we act on what we hear.

If not, why don't you pray right now, "Jesus, come into my heart and save me."  It's as simple as praying, "Father, forgive me of my sin and receive me as Your child."

Regardless of your denomination - this is the way to God.  Romans 10:9 says, "If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved."

Praying this prayer, my sweet sister, is the first step to being in relationship with Jesus - and HEARING HIM SPEAK, personally to you!

Boot Camp Day 11: 5 Tips to Hearing God AND 2 Unique ISI's

    1 Samuel 3:9
"Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening."

Two weeks ago I challenged you to find something that really peaks your interest to study during your quiet time.  What did you find?  Has it captivated your interest?!

Last week, I encouraged you, (though in reality, it may have been a challenge to believe), but God will speak to us.   He will speak to us personally, through His Word into the depths of our heart - addressing our issues; our insecurities and our problems.  We don't have to go through the church or through a priest or a minister.  We can go directly to God through Jesus Christ.  He will speak!

I don't know about you, but this is mind blowing to me!  It is incredible that the God of the Universe will speak directly to little me about my little issues.  But He does!  He'll speak to you too!

We just have to be willing to listen and obey.

Today, I want to share 5 tips to hearing God speak.  If you will apply these tips in your quiet time, you too, will hear God speak...

    a.      Always open your quiet time in prayer –
Repeat the words of Samuel, "Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening."  I even add, "Lord, I don't want to just read words.  Speak - you have permission to address anything!  Search my heart."

    b.      Expect to hear God speaking into your heart –  (Hebrews 11:6)

    c.       Come to your quiet time with your circumstances in mind.
Be ready to connect the dots of what you are reading - to your everyday life.

    d.      God will speak where you are.  Meaning, if you are reading a devotional, a book in the Bible, a Bible study, etc... - He’ll speak in that place.

    e.      If you go days without hearing Him speak, consider changing what you are reading.
This is why I encourage you to study something that has you engaged and interested.

Boot Camp Day 10: Willing to Hear God Speak?

    Exodus 34:14 NLT
God is passionate about His relationship with you.

I'm embarrassed to share this... but it's the truth.

I used to think people who would say, "God told me..." were just plain weird.   I'd call them religious weirdos.

However, in 2003 when I needed REAL solutions to very REAL problems, this changed.  Suddenly, for the first time, my quiet time came alive.  It would seem the passage in the Bible I was reading, was written with me in mind - giving me specific, practical guidance.

The trigger for an alive quiet time:  When I began connecting the dots of my everyday life issues to what I was reading in my Bible.  This IS the God of the Universe speaking!

God is REAL.  He is PERSONAL.  And He is ATTENTIVE to our everyday lives if we'll allow Him to be.  He desires to speak to you personally and intimately about  the big stuff and the little stuff in your life.

But we must be willing to listen...  Are you willing to listen to Him?

I realize many of us comprise different denominations.  But please know - regardless of denomination, your Creator desires to have one-on-one contact with you on a daily basis.

    Let me hear from you:
    • Do you believe God will speak personally to you?  Are you afraid of what He might say?!
    • What preconceptions have you formerly entertained about God speaking personally?

Boot Camp Day 9: Benefits of Becoming Beautiful

    Psalm 34:5
"Those who look to Him are radiant."

Yesterday, I issued a challenge:    The amount time you spend becoming beautiful each day - give your inward beauty the same amount of time, attention and thought.

Being VERY aware, we are all at different places in our walk with Jesus. For some of you, 10 minutes is HUGE because it used to be zero minutes.

As your trainer, stay committed to your 10 minutes each day. But next week, I want you to increase to 15 minutes.

During drop-off at school this morning, a BIG truck cut me off in carpool and almost ran over me.  I was FURIOUS!  It was all I could do not to blare the horn.   (We are at a Christian school, I thought. How would that look?)

So within the privacy of my car, I began calling him a "Jerk;" You're gonna kill somebody;"  I continued, "It's ALL about you, buddy.  ALL ABOUT YOU."

Then I remembered... Though I had dropped off my son, my daughter was still in the back seat.

    Quality parenting, huh?

Convicted of my less than godly behavior (just 3 minutes prior, the 3 of us had prayed together), I decided, this ugly outburst was a signal that I needed more of Jesus today.

Ugly outbursts should be our signal that we need more time with Jesus in our quiet time...   Allowing Him to make us inwardly beautiful.

Ways inward beauty manifests in everyday life.

    Did you notice today's Scripture?
    • The Bible indicates a physical radiance upon our countenance when we've made time becoming inwardly beautiful!

    • The way inward beauty would have manifested this morning would have come in the form of patience.  So when this big burly truck came swinging into my lane, almost running me over -

Patience and self-control would have won the moment.  Maybe a prayer, "Lord, wake him up before he kills someone."

Remember the quiz from last week???

    • How do you act when you do not get your way?

Inward beauty may get frustrated, but you've learned to trust Jesus with the circumstance. You've learned first hand He has a purpose and plan.  You remain at peace - no manipulating or trying to control.
    • How do you respond when someone offends you?
Inward beauty intentionally chooses to love and give the benefit of the doubt.  Inward beauty even chooses to forgive even though the offender may not have asked for forgiveness.
    • How do you act when pushed to the limit by your children, your spouse or the pressures of everyday life...
Inward beauty manifests in self-control and not allow you to lose your temper!

Inward beauty turns to Jesus - pouring out your feelings, frustrations and thoughts in your chair till the peace comes.  (And I would say, POUR IT OUT ON HIM, not on another.  He can handle our frustrations and pressures.)  And provide REAL solutions.
    • What is your first response when bad news comes either through a phone call, another person or email?
Inward beauty has learned to run to Jesus - by coming to your "chair;" Bible in lap, knowing He will speak to you personally in the midst of your storm.

Becoming beautiful starts in the chair! Not the beauty chair - but the quiet time chair!
    .
When our stomachs growl, we know we're hungry.   When our behavior or emotions flare or act out poorly - this is a signal that we need more chair time with Jesus.
